Detroit Knows Cars is a fine art exhibit returning to downtown Detroit in January 2013 that will feature artwork from a diverse group of automobile artists. Setting this exhibit in the atrium lobby of the Compuware Corporation headquarters will give the exhibit high visibility as it is launched on the eve of the 2013 North American International Auto Show and continues through January 27, 2013. The exhibit will draw further attention to the rapidly re-developing downtown Detroit, and is a fitting location for this exhibit that will become the newest legacy for the city that put the USA on wheels.
A History of Detroit Knows Cars
Event directors Mark Ducker and Steve Purdy thought there wasn’t enough going on during January in downtown Detroit in spite of over 5000 journalists from over 60 countries and 750,000 public attendees in town for the North American International Auto Show. So, they presented the first-ever Detroit Knows Cars Automobile Art Exhibit in the lobby of the Chase Tower Building on Woodward Avenue from January 7- January 28, 2012. A well attended “Meet the Artists” reception filled the lobby that included all but one of the presenting artists in attendance along with many special guests.
Prelude to the Detroit Knows Cars Automobile Art Competition
Detroit was dubbed “The Motor City” as it became the center of the American automobile industry over one hundred years ago. To celebrate automobile art and Detroit’s automobile heritage, Detroit Knows Cars is planning an international automobile art competition and exhibit that will be on display in several downtown Detroit venues showcasing the best artists for whom the automobile is the central theme.
The mission of the Detroit Knows Cars (DKC) Automobile Art Competition is to create the premier automobile art event in the world, with the eyes of the art world turned to Detroit each year as the home of a unique art competition that will grow in stature each year and become recognized as a “must see” art experience.
By offering substantial cash prizes for Awards of Excellence determined by a prestigious panel of jurors as well as a People’s Choice Award, DKC expects hundreds, if not thousands of entries from professional artists showcasing their interpretive images of the automobile. A group of finalists, including the winners, will become the DKC public art exhibit to be displayed in various venues in downtown Detroit.
The 2013 Detroit Knows Cars Automobile Art Exhibit can be seen every day from 8 AM - 8 PM in the lobby of the Compuware Corporation headquarters at One Campus Martius in downtown Detroit.
